Have you or someone you know been diagnosed with cancer?
For patients newly diagnosed with cancer, getting in better physical and mental shape before starting treatment can improve outcomes and reduce complications, according to a new study.
In the August 2013 edition of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the study states, " A growing body of evidence supports preparing newly diagnosed cancer patients for and optimizing their health before starting acute treatments," write Drs. Julie K. Silver and Jennifer Baima of Harvard Medical School.
Their article, titled Cancer Prehabilitation: An Opportunity to Decrease Treatment-Related Morbidity, Increase Cancer Tretment Option, and Improve Physical and Psychological Health Outcomes, is the first comprehensive review of the topic.
"There is a rather long and impressive history of using prehabilitation to improve orthopedic surgical outcome, " Dr. Silver comments. "Our new review shows that there is a unique opportunity to help many people who have been newly diagnosed with cancer to improve their physical and emotional outcomes".

What Role Can a Certified Professional Cancer Coach Play in Your Recovery?
Certified Professional Cancer Coaches are professional health care practitioners. They are Registered Nutritionists, Nurses, Naturopaths, Psychologists, Medical Doctors, Oncologists etc., who are all specially trained to work with cancer patients in the clinical, nutritional, lifestyle and mental health aspects of cancer treatment, recovery and survival.
In private coaching, we work with the patient and consider his or her specific diagnosis, medical treatments, nutrition, lifestyle, environment, psycho-social and emotional health. These are all factored to reduce side effects, encourage recovery and help to eliminate any recurrence of cancer down the road.
Private coaching supports an unconditional coach/client bond for a 1- 5-year period. Upon meeting your coach for the first time, she will spend some time with you to make you feel comfortable - allowing the two of you to get to know each other. You will be given the opportunity to ask every question you have about your cancer, in order to fully understand the how's and why's of it's relationship to you. A full health history will be taken, and an outline of your diet and lifestyle will be requested.
Before leaving, your coach will ask for copies of your pathology report, blood work, treatments and pharmaceuticals to date. In the seven additional meetings moving forward, a complete and personalized nutrition and lifestyle plan to encourage apoptosis (cancer cell death) will be provided for you. Your plan will complement any surgery, chemotherapy or radiation you may be having. In addition, you may be provided medical options to enhance your treatments and/or recovery. We will ask that you bring this to your doctor for discussion.
In the private coaching program, your coach and you will spend 8 weeks together covering topics such as:
If you have cares or concerns about anything related to your cancer or recovery, you have your coach to depend on at any time, by email or phone. Clients often let go of all fear of their cancer by the sixth week. This is due to the empowerment they now feel as a result of having answers and a good solid plan from which to transform during this journey.
Coaches work with all cancers, all ages, all stages including cachexia, palliative care and chronic pain management. Clients and/or their caregivers will receive full cancer protocols (medical, integrative and complementary/holistic) for their unique cancer.
